Focus
Most lawyers have known someone practicing law (maybe even starting in law school) who has an alcohol or drug problem. We also know that our profession generally has an alarmingly high rate of chemical dependency and mental health problems. Although we see this played out in the office, we rarely see behind the scenes, into the personal toll the lawyer's impairment takes on his or her family and friends. This year, you will have an opportunity to hear about that firsthand, from an attorney whose attorney brother died from alcoholism at the age of 49. You'll also hear from a prosecutor with the State Bar, who will tell you about how the deceased attorney's situation played out in the disciplinary system. Finally, and most importantly, you will learn about State Bar resources that are available to you, and your attorney friends and colleagues, to address these issues effectively and early on.
